Artifact: Fungi Lab Activity
The artifact that I chose for this unit is a picture of a petri dish that contains a piece of bread. This picture is from the fungi lab, which we conducted near the beginning of the year. For this lab we had 3 petri dishes, each with a piece of bread in it. Then we got the bread and rubbed it on our shoes to collect dirt and anything else. Next we added a few drops of water to each piece of bread and sealed it into the petri dish. One of the dishes was put out in room temperature; the other in a refrigerator and the last petri dish was put into an incubator. Then the petri dishes were left there and every few days we observed as the fungi began to grow. In this picture you don’t see the fungi because it was taken on the first day. At the end we observed that all breads had fungi but the dish, which was in the incubator. From our observations we came to the conclusion that fungi best grows in warm temperatures.
From this lab there is one very important lesson, which I learned and it is, that fungi grows best in warm temperatures. A few days before we did this lab, at home I found that our bag of bread had fungus growing on it. I threw the bread away and I was confused because the expiration date hadn’t arrived yet. Then after conducting this experiment I found out why the fungus had grown. The fungus grew on the bread because someone placed the bag of bread on top of the microwave. This heat from the microwave went to the bag of bread and this made the process of fungi growth faster. This new finding fascinated me. I gained new knowledge from this artifact and that is why I chose it for this unit.
