615 New Species Found in Madagascar in 10 Years
The article is about the discovery of 615 new species in Madagascar from 1999-2010. Of the species discovered, 42 are invertebrates, 17 fish, 69 amphibians, 61 reptiles, 385 plants and 41 mammals. Madagascar ha great biodiversity but there is also harmful human activities that threaten the lives of the wildlife there. These activities include clearing of forests and burning of fossil fuels, which are also big issues in North America. At the end of the article, the author emphasizes the importance of the preservation of Madagascar’s species that have been discovered and the species that have yet to be found.
This article states a major issue, which is the preservation of wildlife. Everyday human activities such as burning of fossil fuels destroy our planet, which is not only a home to humans but also millions of other species. We need to act quickly to protect our planet before we destroy the beauty of the place we call home. If no action is taken, we humans will cause our species along with many other species to go extinct.
After reading this article I took a moment to think about the affects I have on Earth. I noted that I do things daily that hurt our planet such as using more water than needed, leaving lights on, keeping the fan in my room on and leaving my TV on even though no one’s watching it. These are a few things that I noted and this article has made me want to change. Everyone needs to be educated on this subject, which is the affect of OUR daily activities on Earth. The more people that are educated, more people will be inspired to make lifestyle changes. I have already started and I hope more people do the same.

One-Third of Earth’s Plants and Animals Now at Risk of Extinction
The article talks about a serious world topic, which is the extinction of species. It states that according to the most recent edition of the United Nation’s Global Biodiversity Outlook, a third of all plants and animals are now at risk of extinction. They blame western consumerism and pollution for this problem. Our planet can’t handle our pattern of production and consumption. If we continue at this rate, our planet will be damaged beyond repair. A bio diverse planet is not only important to animal life but is also critical in maintaining human life.
For me as a citizen, this is very scary. To think that the things we do daily affects the species among us, just imagine how much it hurts us. We are certainly not invincible so our actions have hurt us too. In the news you hear about developing countries facing problems such as scarcity of clean water, increased amounts of natural disaster and many issues that are going to continue unless drastic changes are made to the way we live. One third of the plants and animals are at risk of extinction and that thought is very scary. Just imagine animals such as lions and polar bears may never be seen again. If we continue to live the way we do now, our grandchildren and maybe even our children will never see these animals.
To improve the situation we are in now, we need to consume as little as possible. Currently, we are consuming beyond our needs and that is one reason why plants and animals are near extinction. We need to produce less and consume less. We need to find ways to reduce, reuse and recycle the things we see as waste because in many cases it isn’t necessarily waste. You know what they say, “One man’s garbage is another’s treasure!”
