Artifact: Karyotyping
For this unit the artifact I chose is a picture of various chromosomes. They are lined from biggest to smallest. This activity is karyotyping and it was on of the parts of out Murder Genetics summative. For the karyotyping component of the summative we were required to cut out chromosomes, group them in twos and last we had to glue them in order from biggest to smallest. After they were glue on we had to analyze them to see if there were any mistakes in the chromosomes to find specific disorders. An example of a disorder would be if in male karyotype, the sex determining chromosomes are XXY instead of XY then this is a disorder called Klinefelter Syndrome.
This activity was very important for the genetics unit because disorders were an important component of this unit. The karyotyping activity taught us to group a set of chromosomes and it taught us to find disorders by looking at the karyotype. This is important for any student looking at a career in life or health sciences. These sorts of activities are most likely common in those fields. The karyotype we did was very simple compared to real one but it gives us an idea of task. This activity is very important for any looking into being a detective of some sort or maybe even forensic scientists. Karyotyping is an important part of their job as they will be examining these and trying to find clues to help them complete their investigation. In conclusion this activity was very interesting as it taught us a lesson while we completed our assignment. This activity also gave me new knowledge on how to carefully examine anything. During this activity it took me a bit of time to figure out the mistakes in the karyotype. I learned to use my resources as I used the Internet to find the mistake. This activity was very good for me as it gave me new knowledge and introduced me to the world of detectives and forensic scientists.
